It seems to depends on the level of autism and individual skills. I'm familiar with one young man who (with a job coach) does the laundry for a local physical therapist and also helps with small chores around an office - emptying garbage cans, sharpening pencils and shredding.
There is a new interactive website, http://jobs4autism.com, with the sole purpose of gathering and giving information on experiences, both positive and negative, advice, types of jobs, etc. to help individuals in the autism community find employment and some level of independence. Please share your experiences and give feedback on the website so we can continue to improve it, and therefore be able to help others.
